SCAREWARE:
You visit or are redirected to a malcious website in
some way:
1) A popup message appears. The message can vary, but is designed to
scare you.
2) A scan that looks like its taking place on your computer starts. Its
all fake, you computer isnt really being 'scanned' The scan will of
course find many threats in the form of trojans, virus, worms
etc.
3) Last is the prompt to save and install software that will remove the
threats for you.
There are no threats on your computer. The only purpose of this
software is for you to activate or register it. Once installed it will
only provide more annoying popups and warnings about all kinds of fake
malware. If you try to have the fake software remove the threats and
heres the catch; you will be prompted to register or activate it
first. This step will take you to a website were you will be handing
over personal information and losing money.

Other web based messages to install scareware or
other malware are also possible. You might be prompted to install
software for some reason maybe to display content, view a video,
'update' something etc. Do not install anything based on some web
site prompting you to do so. Use the
Alt +F4 key to close the window, or bring up task manager by click on
the ctrl-alt-delete keys at once. Under the applications tab click on
'end task'. Variations of the popup messages
are endless. The following are all malicious pop ups
requesting you to download and install software to your computer which
of course is nothing but malware:

.

The following are fake scareware popups
generated after the malware is installed to your computer. Many
variations of popups are possible. Remember the whole point is to have
you 'register or activate' the malware which will take you to a web
site where you will be handing over personal and credit card
information.

Below are scareware generated balloon messages and
icons once the malware is installed to your computer. This
scareware goes by many
different names and often resurfaces with new names and looks. The
popups, warnings etc are all the same. Some of
this scareware is really just very annoying and easily removed. Others
might be more intrusive like preventing your real anti-malware from
updating or starting up, blocking certain websites, making
registry
changes so that task manager is unavailable or generating other popup
messages:

Here is a scareware generated message to remove
Malwarebytes which is a excellent malware remover:
